Executive Director’s Report
Second Quarter – April-July 2009
Bartlesville Regional United Way Programs
The After School Zone
Ended the school year with etiquette and personal
hygiene workshops on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On May 1, Sally
Jenkins visited for our fourth annual wrappings of the Maypole.
Ms. Jenkins is a member of the local folk dance society. After
School Zone students visited the Price Tower for its Worlds Fair
exhibit for the year’s final field trip. All . . . Zone
enrollees were awarded 50% scholarships to Summer Fine Arts ’09.
On-Cue
Wrapped up the school year with an increased
enrollment of about 50% dues to its outreach into North Tulsa.
On the group’s annual field trip, eight students with 100%
attendance for the year, and two chaperones, went to San
Antonio, Texas. Under the direction of Mrs. Jackson, the program
started back up for the fall semester on Sept. 11.
Center for Fine Arts
April and May were dedicated to planning for
Summer Fine Arts 2009. SFA activities began June 1. Our initial
SFA enrollment (16) increased approximately 25% each week of
June, peaking at 32 students. The Center partnered with the
Price Tower Arts Center on June 20 for our Juneteenth
Celebration.
Work Ethics Pro$per
The Apprentice Class of 2009 held its graduation
luncheon May 9 at 66 FCU. Twenty-four apprentices were placed
this year, starting June 1. on June 26, apprentices were treated
to miniature golf and a cookout at Sooner Park, with the SFA
kids as their guests (thanks to Cindy and Mike Dronyk).
Applications for the Class of 2010, available at the Center
office and on our website, were accepted through Sept. 11.
Community Outreach
Director McCorvey met with Wilson School
Principal Sandra Kent and Counselor Karen Salge about the
Peaceful Warriors program at Wilson. -- The Douglassaires,
alumni of the old separate-but-equal school, held their
tri-annual reunion here at the Center on July 21-25. -- We are
initiating a partnership with Tjuana Boulanger, a resident of
Brookhaven Apts, who is working with kids there.
Fundraising
All That Jazz 2010 will feature Grady Nicols at
Hillcrest Country Club, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. – We received a
$10,000 Venture Grant from the United Way for the Peaceful
Warriors program and $1,000 from the Bartlesville Community
Foundation for the same program. Conoco-Phillips employees
donated $200 for SFA scholarships. -- Our fourth annual Bedlam
Raffle of OU-OSU football tickets began Aug. 1. The raffle will
end in early October in compliance with the United Way blackout
period. – In coming months, we will be submitting requests for
assistance to Bartlesville Allied Arts & Humanities Council,
Oklahoma Arts Council, Wal-Mart MDC, M.C. Price and the Lyons
Foundation. We will also be seeking assistance from Doenges Ford
for repair on our Ford van.
Plans
Dir. McCorvey has agreed to work with COP’s Cory
Phillips and Erin Tullos on establishing a science program for
youth called Science Café. The first Science Café took place at
the Center on Sept. 19.
